Considered sacred by ancient Hawaiians, historic Ka’a’awa on the northeastern side of Oahu is home to the beautiful, 4,000-acre Kualoa Ranch. Established in 1850, family-owned and operated Kualoa Ranch offers several different ways to explore the surrounding countryside and all of its varied terrain.
You can hike the trails on foot or even hop on an ATV, but if you’re looking to truly understand the wonder and beauty of Ka’a’awa and that special feeling of awe that inspired the ancient Hawaiians and their deep sense of spirituality, there’s nothing like the thrill of riding out on horseback, communing with nature.
Go for an hour, or two – it’s your choice. There’s no shortage of terrific photo opportunities and lots of varied terrain for you to explore.
The hour long horseback ride takes you through the southern part of the ranch which includes several highlights - an ancient Hawaiian fishpond that’s been around for 800 years, and a gorgeous view of famed Mokoli’i Island – called “Chinaman’s Hat” by the locals.
If you opt for the two hour ride, you’ll travel north instead, deep into the valley, through dense forest areas and past historic World War II bunkers. Along the way you’ll come across some mighty familiar locations; Kualoa Ranch has served as the backdrop for a number of major Hollywood productions, including Jurassic Park and NBC’s hit TV show Lost!
