Sitting next to Ni’ihau is Lehua Rock, a dive site that provides the greatest Kauai scuba diving. Expect to discover amazing wall dives, mammoth caves, colorful fish, soaring lava pillars, and unlimited visibility during your scuba diving exploration off the coast of Ni’ihau. The Forbidden Island, Ni’ihau, is seventeen miles off the southwest coast of Kauai and is the smallest inhabited island. Lehua Rock’s underwater world is the home to a variety of marine life that consists of large schools of butterfly fish, spinner dolphins, monk seals, octopus, tiger cowries, lobster, spotted eagle rays, manta rays, sharks, and so much more! Ni’ihau is easy to get to from Kauai by way of the Kaulakahi Channel. The morning boat trip starts at 6:00am from Kauai’s South Shore traveling twenty miles for two and half hours. The ride is frequently clear and calm during the morning trip to Ni’ihau, but if you easily get sea-sick you may want to reconsider. When the view of Ni’ihau emerges, breakfast will be served. The first dive of the morning is short and deep which is typically at Vertical Awareness or Keyhole. The unlimited visibility is about a hundred feet deep so you can clearly see the schools of pennant fish cluster around the top of the 280 foot wall and lava shelves. This area is the home to pillow starfish, lobsters, octopus, monk seals, and reef fish.
Super Highways is the second dive site named for its towering lava formation that bears the resemblance to a super structure highway! Super Highway is a very popular dive location that is the home to a diverse group of marine creatures such as the tiger cowries, huge yellow margin eels, octopus, and white tip reef sharks. Scuba divers have a fantastic time discovering small dark caves and exploring the area while the Captain of the boat prepares a delicious lunch.
The third dive is a Drive-Through Cave or drift along Lehua Rock. This dive is shallow and a relaxing experience as the water level rises and the current increases, but under the water is still where you can find the action! At the completion of the third dive, it will be time to get ready for the return boat ride back to Kauai. As you relax, enjoy the beautiful scenery and the stunning sunset off the island of Ni’ihau.
