All Pacific Whale Foundation Eco-Adventures are guided by skilled United States Coast Guard licensed captain and a group of educated Certified Marine Naturalists. This special Pacific Whale Foundation Molokini Wild Side Eco-Adventure was developed due to the years of marine life research including a detailed and wide-range study of Molokini’s wildlife, corals, and fish. Molokini is a small volcanic caldera, located 2.5 miles from the island of Maui and is the only Island Marine Sanctuary. Birdwatchers, keep your binoculars handy; often, seabirds such as Great Frigatebirds and Wedge-tailed Shearwaters are spotted!
The Molokini Crater was formed approximately 150 thousand years ago, according to scientists that have studied the amazing and unique crater. This amazing caldera seems to be missing half of its crater, but still emerges about 160 feet above sea level and has been measured to be just about a half of a mile wide. Molokini stands alone two miles from the shore of Maui creating an awesome snorkeling experience. There are several reasons Molokini Crater is such a special diving and snorkeling area. The crescent shape of Molokini provides a guard from strong currents and a powerful surge. The consistent high quality of the water around Molokini provides clear visibility and can extend to 150 feet. This is quite remarkable! Molokini is made of rock; therefore, there are no clumps of dirt to slide into the water making it cloudy and dense. The water is quite absent of sediment providing a means for sun rays to penetrate the surface of the water, feeding the algae growing inside the colorful coral. Currents from the offshore carry food, at the same time flushing away the small amount of residue that exists. The cause and effect is a remarkable, hearty bed of coral providing a supreme Maui snorkeling adventure. Molokini is an ecological site and is registered by Hawaii’s State Marine Life and Bird Conservation District. This outstanding underwater sanctuary is where over 30 diverse colorful coral flourish and thousands of marine life and fish live in cohabitation. The shallow reef surrounding Molokini is teeming with an array of over 250 different species of fish with their own unique pattern of colorful design. Many of the fish you will see include Bluefin Trevally, Black Trigger Fish, Raccoon Butterfly Fish, Parrot Fish, Moorish Idol, and Yellow Tag Fish. Molokini Crater is the only location where you can explore these rare and remarkable species of fish and coral.
