The first stop on the Malolo Charters Snorkel Cruises is the perfect place to snorkel, Molokini Crater. The volcanic cinder cone is located 2.5 miles from the coast of Maui and was active 230,000 years ago, according to the measurements taken from the lava chips inside the cone.  Molokini Crater is a natural shelter mostly submerged, but with an extension of approximatley160 feet above the ocean’s surface. A large portion of the caldera rim has worn away, leaving the bottom of the crater to fill up with ocean water. This erosion left a visible crescent moon shape  and a protective coral reef. Molokini is made of rock, so there is no residue of dirt to slip into the water causing it to be cloudy. The visibility of the water surrounding Molokini can reach to 150 feet. The large crater walls offer a nesting spot for Maui’s sea birds. The crater was listed to be a marine preserve by the State Marine Life Conservations District in 1997. This is one of the many Hawaii Attractions you don’t want to miss.
