Kohala

Emerging from the sea more than 500,000 years ago, the Kohala Volcano is the oldest volcano that forms the Big Island Hawaii. Kohala is believed to be extinct.

Mauna Kea

“White Mountain” is the Hawaiian name for Mauna Kea, the tallest volcano and the tallest mountain in the world when measured from the ocean floor to its summit. Mauna Kea was named for the snow that is seen on the summit. Numerous observatories are located on the summit. Hawaii tour companies provide evening trips to the summit to view the sunset, stars, learn about the history of the volcano, and the work done by the centers. Maua Kea, is categorized as an inactive volcano, however it is most likely to erupt again.

Mauna Loa

Mauna Loa is the largest volcano on this planet! It is the second youngest and second most active volcano on the Big Island. Mauna Loa is very dangerous and is expected to erupt in many diverse directions. Hawaiian history records the eruption of Mauna Loa once every decade. However is has slowed its pace with the last eruption in 1984.

Hualalai

Hualalai is the third youngest and third most active volcano located on the western side of the Big Island. During the 1700’s Hualalai had six different vents erupting lava. Two of the vents produced enough lava that it reached the sea. The Kona Airport is built on the larger of the two flows. Haualalai is projected to erupt within the next 100 years.

Kilauea

Kilauea, located on the southeast side of the Big Island is one of the most active volcanoes on the planet. Kilauea has added 500 acres to the Big Island’s shoreline because of the continuous eruption, known as Pu’u ‘O’o-Kupaianaha, since January 1983. There is no sign of the current eruption stopping anytime soon.
